It was written as a soprano solo with piano accompaniment. In this current version, it may still be performed as a solo, if desired, but I have added choral harmonies so that it can also be used as a choir anthem at christenings or children’s services. It is in 4 parts (SATB) throughout, apart from a couple of measures where the sopranos divide.The simple accompaniment is for piano or organ.

This setting of the traditional Harvest hymn, We plough the fields and scatter, is written in popular style, a little syncopated. The choir parts are mainly in Unison, with short passages in harmony (SATB). There is also a simple Unison part for the audience/congregation to join in (All good gifts around us), and simple percussion parts could easily be added. The piece could be performed by children or adults, or both together, and though primarily intended for harvest, could fit into any service or concert of thanksgiving. In this version the accompaniment is for brass quintet (brass band instruments), comprising 2 cornets, tenor horn, trombone and Eb bass - but could easily be adapted for orchestral brass. [NB If listening to the recording, please note that it repeats more often than it should - but it will give you a good idea of how the piece goes!].

Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. Although originally conceived for a large chorus with orchestral accompaniment, the setting may be performed with just organ or piano.There's a youtube video at https://youtu.be/HQwYDJRdmcc - this is an extract from the first performance in the magnificent setting of Berlin Cathedral, which was packed to capacity. This was commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of John F Kennedy School’s annual Advent services, in collaboration with the American Church in Berlin.The prelude incorporates themes from various Advent hymns, as well as elements of the fanfare theme from the main choral piece. As well as providing an introduction to a performance of the Cherubic Hymn setting (which can be ordered separately), the prelude may also be performed as a stand-alone piece.As in the first performance, I have left the registrations to be added by the organist.

Fanfare for Tony was written for the inaugural conference of the British Association for Music Therapy, and first performed on 21st February 2014 by students of Birmingham Conservatoire of Music, and this is a slightly shortened version. The piece, scored for ten brass instruments and timpani, was written in memory of Prof. Tony Wigram, a leading figure in the world of music therapy, who died in 2011. It contains a number of passing references to music therapy songs, and quotations from music strongly associated with Tony's family, including a Danish folksong (introduced by the four trombones), and a theme from the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saens. A short fugato section leads to a triumphant ending, featuring the German hymn tune Nun danker alle Gott.

Included are well known songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which are woven into a continuous piece lasting about 6' 45. The medley starts with the English song, ‘Early one morning’, one verse of which re-appears at the end to round things off. The tradition of singing folk songs in schools and in the community has very much faded away in the UK, but the four songs selected for this medley are likely to be well known and loved by many of the older generation!The simple harmonies range from three to four parts (SAB/SATB), with some unison sections as well.
